Prisons

WAYout now has a music studio and runs weekly dance and rap cypher sessions attended by 200 + inside the male correctional centre funded by the Joe Strummer Foundation. Prison staff report reduced stress and trouble from those taking part. It gives them the chance to learn something, gain confidence through creating and hope for the future. For many it is the only time that they are sociable and come out side of their cell. On release as we encourage them to continue to learn in WAYout

Tracks from the male and female prisons feature on the album ‘Sounds of Salone’ soon to be released.

We run weekly sessions in the female prison, teaching photoshop and editing, drawing and writing. We also run music, DJ and dance sessions. Some of the women’s poems and drawings appear in our lates book ‘Broken Pens’ and spoken word stories here

International Women’s Day in the female prison

On International Women’s Day we partnered with Advocaid to screen spoken word pieces by the women, display drawings and watch ex prisoners perform short dramas of their experiences.
